Configuring Repeater mode access points TP-Link TL-WA701ND and TL-WA801ND

Configuring Repeater mode access points TP-Link TL-WA701ND and TL-WA801ND

Again we walk around with the repeater! In this case we let DD-WRT teams and let's focus on other household devices such as TP-Link. In recent years, the brand TP-Link has been characterized as a relatively inexpensive and affordable brand. As you can see over the next tutorial, settings for repeating a signal (receive and resend Wifi) is much simpler. The present manual is valid for the following models:

To access the configuration of these devices is necessary to set the IP address on your network card within range of your computer network. In this case we better eg 192.168.1.10. Gateway To use the device's IP is 192.168.1.254.

Set TP-Link Repeater Mode

After setting the network card, connect the device to the computer network cable, and we hope that this indicates that the device is connected.

Once connected open a web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome ...) and type in the address bar the device IP 192.168.1.254. When you press Enter a dialog box appears where we will get the username and password of the device, in this case User: admin Password: admin.

Set TP-Link Repeater Mode

When you press enter to accept the configuration of the device.

First in the "Network" we set the gateway router (Gateway), which is the IP address of your ADSL router, usually 192.168.1.1. In the event that the ADSL router's IP address as 192.168.0.1 was another, we should also change the direction of the repeater to within that range, for example 192.168.0.254. Also with the network card of the team, would put for example 192.168.0.10. And go back to enter setup, this time through the IP address 192.168.0.254.

Set TP-Link Repeater Mode

After changing the gateway click on "Save", wait for data to be saved and go to the Wireless section. In the first section, "Wireless Settings" modify the parameters as in the image, we set the "Operation Mode" and select Universal Repeater our country "Region".

Set TP-Link Repeater Mode

Once done click on the button "Survey" to find the networks detected by the computer and we see a new window with a table like this:

Set TP-Link Repeater Mode

Select the network you are trying to connect and click "Connect". By doing this we return to the setup and we checked that box, "MAC of AP" MAC address appears in our ADSL router. Click on "Save" to save changes and go to "Wireles Security" where we have to tell the repeater the password to the wifi network to which you want to connect. We must tell you if the password is WEP or WPA and write in the box provided.

Once you have entered the password, press "Save" to save changes and press "Click here" to reset the router, click on "Reboot" and accept.

If we followed the steps correctly, when you restart the router and will repeat the wireless network signal. This router repeats the signal with the same name and same password as the original wifi network.

  1. a question has to be at a certain distance to repeat q? porq tube problem with the corner q gives me speedy wifi signal and walk when I was kiere of q is q q o to be near the repeat?

  2. Hello, yoni:

It is important that the final location where we will place the repeater has a signal at least acceptable of the network that we want, so you can repeat the network with good quality. If the signal is bad in this endpoint, the connection is unstable.

A greeting and thank you very much for your comment! ;)

  3. Thanks for the tutorial! works perfectly! ... was trying all night with the directions on the product and could not. Very good your contribution. Thank you!

  4. Thanks for your comment, juangoto! ;)

  5. Hello, this topic interests me thank you for your work, my only question is whether repeated signal at a time, since I pick several that are open and one day arrives according to one or the other, the ideal would be one to repeat them all arrives and I connect to the signal that has more then. thank you very much for everything.

  6. hi hear a question I can use this router to me like Internet via ethernet cable? I have it configured as a repeater but as I can do to burn Internet AVERAGE same ethernet??? I hope you help me

  7. LaCuevaWifi 13. Jan, 2012 at 19:26

    Hello, George:

    Repeats only one signal simultaneously.

    A greeting.

  8. LaCuevaWifi 13. Jan, 2012 at 19:30

Michael, these routers can also be used as clients (receiving over WiFi and Ethernet cable repeat).

If you set it as a repeater, you also have to provide access via Ethernet.

A greeting and thank you very much everyone for your comments!

hey follow your steps but could not repeat a security network with wep ke sure you put all the steps, I have the network password I enter it from my computer but the repeater repeats as it should

  10. LaCuevaWifi 19. Jan, 2012 at 14:15

    Hello, Juan Manuel:

This device does not have many more options to set for this device. Are all the steps for this mode of operation.

What do you mean, that does not repeat the signal as it should? Do not increase the signal? Can not connect to the Internet? Do not communicate with the main router? Be more specific, please.

Have placed the repeater at a point where the network signal that you want to repeat? The latter is essential for optimal binding.

    Regards and good luck!

  11. I am quite novice. I ask
The numbers are set in the configuration TC / IP are always those, or are a ejemolo.?
What happens to me is that I did and when I plug the device into your computer crashes I WI FI signal to which I have connected the computer? I hope you understand my question. Thank you very much. Eduardo

  12. LaCuevaWifi 25. Jan, 2012 at 18:22

    Hello, Eduardo:

If IP addresses are approximate. Most home routers have the IP 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254.

If the wireless network router that you want to repeat the address 192.168.1.254, you have to put another different IP on the TP-Link or you will have IP conflicts on the network and have no outlet to the Internet.

Regards and thanks for your comment.

  13. hello, how are you? I feel the following: set up everything as they explain, works perfectly ... but when I turn off the compu to night and back to light the other day, and does not detect the amplified signal it detects the original signal weak .. thus q tngo off the repeater and switch it back to work ... works like normally? or is there something changing q q tmb have in my computer? greetings and thanks.

  14. LaCuevaWifi 26. Jan, 2012 at 10:02

    Hello, Paul:

This problem you mention I have not had. But as a safety recommendation, turn off the router and repeater if not to be used at night. ;)
I guess (and this is just an intuition I have for the moment) that the repeater is hung after a long period of inactivity.

    A greeting!

  15. Thank you very much!

  16. Hello,

Congratulations on your blog and your article.
At the mention: "let DD-WRT teams and let's focus on other household devices."
I know what firmware DD-WRT. What do you mean by household devices, which is the intentional use of DD-WRT compatible devices?

I want to buy an access point repeater functions, but so far I'm a little lost on the subject. Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

  17. Hi, tp-link WA801ND, universal repeater mode, you can put WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK encryption? thank you very much
    a greeting!

  18. Hi, I have the TL-wa801nd, I make the first steps to change the data in the network card, leave it as in the photo you post, but then I go to the browser and does not enter the access point at all, I have windows vista, and I've been here all afternoon with gossip this and I can not configure or his hand or anything, I have two network cards in the pc, miss ye step in both proving and either entered the point.

to better explain, take my livebox the pc, I do step 1 and put the numbers in tcp / ip 4, after I give ok and just connect the access point to the network card in my tower, and no nothing, goes nowhere, the truth is that I have no idea why.

  19. csg, with household devices to computers I mean easier and intuitive when set. In short, computers for beginners. The firmware DD-WRT is (perhaps) more confusing for a user who is not familiar.

Alex works with WPA and WPA2.

alegrm, say you have two cards for wireless or Ethernet network What?. Temporarily disable that you will not be used to configure and test to reset the device.

  20. Hello again, finally I enter setup and I miss everything that gets in your tutorial, once configured and miss the reboot, I have taken to the room where he was going to put on and all ok, I went to the classroom with the laptop to see that rascal and I get my connection has always been "alegrm" but the list of available networks also I get the tp-link apart, I connected to my network without problems but more common alegrm signal that if, but if I give tplink network does not fit, this is normal right?

Duplicate leaving say, because at the end of your tutorial you say that is connected as usual to the same network, that is true, but my question is whether it is normal that it also appears to tplink me I was wrong or something.

    thanks for the help.

  21. Hi very good post I will long for configuration, but I have some doubts:
    - You can connect to a network N with WPA-PSK?
    - The configuration I can do from your laptop to pick up the wifi?
    - I can configure everything without touching the router that gives the wifi?
    - After I can be all set to leave the single access point Wi-Fi spreading that is connected to a PC?

Well am a newbie is that I do not understand Wi-Fi.
    Regards

  22. Hello, Brayan:

    - You can connect to a network N with WPA-PSK? If
    - The configuration I can do from your laptop to pick up the wifi? Yes, but the first time that I recommend you set it for cable. It is safer.
    - I can configure everything without touching the router that gives the wifi? If
    - After I can be all set to leave the single access point Wi-Fi spreading that is connected to a PC? Yes, that's the purpose of the repeater mode.

    A greeting! ;)

  23. Thank you ;) !
And asked if I haver router arrives and I set it up.
    Greetings.

  24. Hello, congratulations for the great tutorial. I have the 701. I followed your instructions, and perfect, but I have a problem. Both the iPhone and the iPad catch the signal router perfectly. But I'm the other half of the house (where it reaches the repeater), and although they take the repeated signal to stop, not enganchancacla same. Ie adjustments wireless signal is recognized excellently, but not catch in any way. Any ideas on the subject?
Thank you for anticipadocy congratulations again.

  25. Hello, congratulations for the tutorial on how to set repeater mode the TL-WA801ND TP-LINK. I would like to know the wiring diagram of the TL-WA801ND the desktop computer when you perform the configuration cable to the TL-WA801ND, I have in my home internet network TELMEX, reached by cable to a modem brand THOMSON one output connection to the internet gatehouse to the CPU.
I could not configure the TL-WA801ND, thanks for your contribution vaslioso.

  26. Hello, very nice tutorial, look I have a doubt:
I have a wifi network from a router and I have the ssid and the key is of a kindly neighbor who happened to me the key, but I do not want to bother education more, so I will not have access to wifi modem main, well what I I just want to do is place the device and place it connected by ethernet LAN to the computer, I mean I do not want to expand the wireless network ... greetings

    Hello, Fernando:

These devices can also function as a Customer, ie receive wifi and cable forward as if it were a wifi card.

    A greeting! ;)

  28. Thanks for the tut, yesterday I received the device and setting it. I would greatly appreciate you answering these questions:
    1. What is the difference between repeater and repeater use universal ... What?
    2. I can change the network name repeated and / or password?
    3. How dbi must capture the TP-Link to repeat the network without problems?

Thanks for your support and contribution so good

  29. LaCuevaWifi 23. Mar, 2012 at 18:42

    Hello, Rudy:

    I'll answer in order:

    1. - In this device the repeater "plain" asks you to type the router's MAC address you want to repeat the signal. In contrast, with the Universal repeater is not necessary.
    2. - Specifically this device, you can not do that.
    3. - Depends a bit on the quality of the signal (noise or interference from other Wi-Fi) but in general I sense about 20dB for the link is stable.

Regards and thanks for your comment! ;)

  30. hola. Thanks for the tutorial my question is that before all these steps, the first time I put up my pc with windows 7 it detected the 801 nd tp link, I co0nfiguro the same wpa2 psk.Cuando safely entered the details to see the ip ip I have the option of automatic internet and I really work on my laptop with wifi browser OK.but when I put the ip address or ipv4 gateway is not anything the browser. tell me your solution?. I can change the channel you are working with the access point? I say this because using wifi analyzer program from my phone tells me I'm working for the channel 3 and is the worse I said I have to use 11, 12 0 13. thanks if you can help

  31. LaCuevaWifi 03. Apr, 2012 at 9:29

    Hello, Rafa:

As I do not know exactly what configuration you have, the better and faster is that resetees the device and start the configuration of 0 following this manual.

    A greeting!

  32. had all the holy night trying it with the Manual ke super kaja comes in and nothing, follow your tutorial and ready kedo 10 mins, thanks friend.

  33. LaCuevaWifi 10. Apr, 2012 at 12:39

Thank you very much for your comment, Vinny! ;)

  34. very good, my probelma wa801nd is that I have put it as a repeater and universal, but I cut the signal every 30 minutes or so and then the minute I returned the signal, you can do something with that? which may be the problem ? the ip is in the range of the main router, and not to do, thanks

  35. LaCuevaWifi 13. Apr, 2012 at 9:19

Jeralce, the first thing to check is that the repeater receives a good signal. If you receive a small amount can cause cuts signal a drop in coverage by the main router, for example.

    A greeting

  36. HI, I have internet on my phone via cable business, I have a moden gives Wif Senar, but I would amplify that signal to connect to my neighbor that I cross the street. I have a crazy Nanoestation2 he has a receiving antenna of WIF., IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I CAN CONNECT THE DEVICE TO SEND SIGNAL NANOSTATION?

  37. LaCuevaWifi 17. Apr, 2012 at 9:23

    Hello, Olmos:

The post you're looking to do that is

    Greetings!

  38. thanks for answering me on the repeater signal tells me that I come to 23 dbi, prox enough not to cut the connection? would need to put another fimware? what more cuts are online games and my blackberry is very slow, but without the repeater, only with a wifi card is great, I could do? thanks

  39. LaCuevaWifi 18. Apr, 2012 at 9:25

Jeralce, this is precisely the problem, very little signal is 23dB. Place the repeater at a point where you receive at least 30dB.

    Greetings!

  40. then the problem is the reception, go fabric, lol, since when I can I try it again, thank you very much for everything, and if in the end you'll tell me to ido well, hehe, thanks and greetings

  41. Hi, first of all apologize for putting my post 2 times, I was the internet and thought I did not give a thousand apologies, and the second is that I take tip tp-link reptidor wa801nd, not of cut, I do not understand is that if your function is to amplify and repeat a signal is cut every few minutes, I will return it, not want to spend the money on something to have it saved on the box or paperweight as I read in a forum pilllare me and another, thanks for everything, greetings

  42. LaCuevaWifi 19. Apr, 2012 at 13:53

    Hello, Jeralce:

Have you tried at one point with better signal? 30dB above? I say this because in this way should go well. To us it worked well that way.

    A greeting! ;)

  43. hello again, I returned and I caught wa801nd in place wa901nd, the story is that I do not understand anything, I'm more dbi, dbi 30.32, connects great, better than the 801, but which has been my surprise that bang on the half hour, cut the connection and run back, no longer can be, thank you very much

  44. Hello again, I tried the wa901nd in client mode and also cut to 30 minutes, but not only for ono netgear router which is what I have, if not my father who has also jazztel, and at home my sister who is with me phone is also short, this is already incredible, do not make a repeater out the window if you leave some fimware that of the face and worth, because I'm ashamed to carry it back to the shop, although should do it, greetings

  45. LaCuevaWifi 25. Apr, 2012 at 16:44

    Hello again, Jeralce:

In that case you can try to set Repeater mode (WDS). A priori, it is more stable than Universal Repeater.

    A greeting!

  46. Good once again, first to thank you for your help, but not to avail me, I'll say as I have finally solved the main router's IP gateway is 192.168.1.1, well, repeater 192.168.1.10 I have given, and the wifi of the laptop I have set the fixed ip and above the repeater so that no conflicts, I've put the 192.168.1.15, now I have no connection cuts each half an hour or anything, is great, but I am ashamed of others than the tp-link does not put in his instructions or his official site these things so basic to set up the repeater, I hope my solution can help someone else, so that , thank you very much for trying to help me, I congratulate you for the work to another.

  47. I forgot to say that there is no doubt whatsoever which of course we must also give the wifi card, both the fixed ip as I and the main router's DNS, I am already terminated my problem that I have fortunately solved, thanks and greetings

  48. LaCuevaWifi 27. Apr, 2012 at 10:14

Thank you for bringing your experience, Jeralce. Hopefully encourage more people like you to leave comments! ;)

As you mention has been an issue of the main router's DHCP service with the TP-Link is not it?

    A greeting ;)

  49. Gacias you and those who also share their experiences on forums like this, help mucho.El DHCP relay is deactivated, to run the main router, the solution has been to put fixed ip to the card of the notebook and also DNS clear, and so all sorted out, if someone has the same problem I had maybe I can ayuarle solucion.Lo said, Thanks for Everything, a greeting.
